Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District- Coronavirus Update

STATEMENT FROM
SUPERINTENDENT DR. MARY BROWN

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District's administration continues to monitor the developments related to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). We are aware of the concerns regarding the outbreak. We are closely checking all correspondence from the Mississippi Department of Education, who is in contact with the Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH), the state epidemiologist, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding preventive measures and preparation in the event of a local outbreak. At this time, there have been no cases of the virus in the district or school community. We know there are many questions related to the coronavirus, and we will keep our students, faculty, and staff, and community stakeholders informed regarding any changes/updates through our district's webpage, Facebook page, robocall, robotext, the local newspaper, and word of mouth.
The safety, health, and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are of the highest priority. As the global spread of the coronavirus continues to generate public concern, headlines, and speculations, I want to update you on the actions we are taking in the GLCSD to properly respond to the situation.
While we've yet to have any cases of the virus confirmed on any of our campuses, we are monitoring the situation. Our school nurses, faculty and staff will be available and watching for students who display flu-like symptoms. Parents are encouraged to keep students who display flu-like symptoms at home. Parents are also encouraged to provide students with hand sanitizer if they wish to do so. While students are at school, students will be encouraged to wash their hands more frequently. Faculty and staff will be asked to ensure that classrooms and other areas in all buildings are properly sanitized and consistently checked for cleanliness. All classrooms will be supplied with hand sanitizer and paper towels for students and staff to use as needed.
Though it may sound simple, practicing appropriate hygiene is the most important thing we can all do right now. That means thoroughly washing our hands with soap and water, covering our coughs, limiting close contact with others and disinfecting common, shared objects.
For parents of students who have traveled out of town during the spring break, we encourage you to make every effort to ensure your children and families have not been exposed to nor have been infected with this virus. Please use your best judgment before sending your children to school. This also applies to any faculty and staff who have traveled during the break. We need to take every precaution in order to prevent the spread of this virus in our district and community.
At this moment, it's important that we all remain calm. What is needed now is solid planning and preparation based on the most up-to-date facts available. That's what we are doing in the GLCSD to keep all of our students, faculty, and staff safe, and that's what I encourage parents and community members to do in your own homes as well.
We know this situation requires patience. We assure you that we are taking this situation very seriously, and the students, faculty and staff's safety and well-being is our utmost concern. We are counting on everyone working together to ensure the best decisions are made. We plan to make these decisions based on factual information. We promise to keep you informed on all decisions, and of any confirmed cases of the virus in the GLCSD. As we all respond to the coronavirus pandemic, we ask you to be considerate and kind. This is a very serious matter which involves the well-being of others.
We will keep you updated regarding changes.
